Following our first artist-in-residence project with Yanran Cao, we again announced a scholarship for students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg in October 2019. After a two-year break due to the pandemic, our next artist-in-residence Matthias Deeg is now going to present his artwork at this year's Blaue Nacht (lit. Blue Night) on May 7, 2022.
The concept by 29-year-old art student Matthias with the working title "Sniffer" was able to convince the jury in 2019 and prevail over the designs of the competitors. Deeg has been studying painting and art education at the Academy of Fine Arts since 2015. His "Sniffer" will be focused on electromagnetic waves and their aesthetic presentation. In January 2022, Matthias was able to resume his work on “Sniffer” in our workshops and, with free access to materials, manufacturing capabilities and the technical know-how of our staff, further elaborate his idea. This work of art, now renamed 'I see another World but I can't stop', will premier in the foyer of the Museum für Kommunikation as part of the Blaue Nacht and will be on display until May 15.
The artist-in-residence jury, consisting of Prof. Holger Felten, President of the Academy, Andreas Radlmaier, Head of the Project Office of the Cultural Department of the City of Nuremberg, Christel Paßmann, the Project Manager of Blaue Nacht, and Hüttinger managing director Axel Hüttinger, intensively evaluated the submitted comcept ideas in respect of idea, creativity and feasibility. All sketches had great potential and impressed the jury with their various aspects and inventiveness, which did not make it easy for the jury to make a decision.
In our first Artist-in-Residence project, the art student Yanran Cao was selected by the jury with her idea of a gigantic specular cube. Within half a year, the Chinese-born artist revised and produced her design into a work of art with our support. Yanran excited visitors with her multimedia installation “The moonlight is beautiful tonight” and immersed them in a world of images, light reflections and magic mechanical kinetics.
The guiding idea behind our artist-in-residence project is to combine art and science, to let them interact with each other. This integration of science and art is intended to address the thesis that science also has an aesthetic dimension and art also has a cognitive dimension. In recent years we have repeatedly developed projects with renowned artists such as André Heller, Jennifer Townley or Anthony Howe. We would also like to offer young, up-and-coming artists the opportunity to fully exploit their artistic potential and to realize their works with our support.
